Every dog owner needs the Out Fox foxtail mask! Why? Because there’s nothing peaceful about rushing your dog to the pet ER because of one foxtail. TRUE STORY!

My Foxtail Nightmare!
A few years ago, I took my dog out for his last potty break around midnight. When I brought him in, he started sneezing uncontrollably. I wasn’t sure if I should dismiss the sneezing or take it seriously.
As soon as my dog’s nose started bleeding, I immediately rushed him to the pet ER about 15 minutes away.
When I arrived at the ER, the veterinarian had to sedate my dog before pulling out the foxtail. I’m super glad my little dog only weighs 15 pounds because sedation medication can be expensive!

Luckily the vet was able to pull out a huge intact foxtail from my dog’s nose. I unfortunately also left the ER with a vet bill that was over $200!
After that horrible night, I started looking around for a foxtail mask. I stumbled upon the Out Fox Field guard and I’m so glad I did! 😊
What is the Out Fox Foxtail Mask?

The Out Fox Field Guard is a mesh mask designed to protect your dog from harmful objects. These objects can either be ingested or lodged into your dogs eyes, ears, mouth, or nose.
According to the Out Fox website, the Out Fox Field Guard is mainly used to prevent the following:
- Foxtails from penetrating your dogs eyes, ears, mouth, and nose
- Consumption of harmful items
- Insect bites to the facial region
I personally use the Field Guard to protect my dogs from foxtails.
Is the Out Fox foxtail mask Comfortable?
Yes! My dogs have been wearing this product on walks for a few years now. Once it’s on, they really don’t even notice it. To gently get your dog used to wearing the mask, Out Fox offers some helpful tips here.
To make sure you have the most comfortable fit, let’s go over a few features that are worth mentioning:

- Mesh Fabric: The Out Fox foxtail mask is made of breathable mesh that allows your dog to pant and drink water. The creator of the mask was intentional in their design, even down to the color. The dark color is supposed to act as a sun shade 🤯.

- Adjustable Elastic: The Out Fox mask comes with an elastic drawstring that allows you to custom fit the mask to your dog’s neck. It’s important for the elastic to fit comfortably. It shouldn’t be too loose or too tight.

- Velcro Straps: If you have a hyper dog, you can also take advantage of the Field Guard’s velcro straps. These straps act as a tether to your dog’s collar.
Which size should you purchase?

The Out Fox website has very detailed instructions on how to size your dog for the perfect fit. They also explain how to correctly use and position the mask. For detailed instructions click here.
Since I have a big and little dog, I purchased my masks in two different sizes. For my Shih Tzu, I purchased an extra small and for my Pitbull I purchased a medium-short or medium “O”.
How Much does the out fox foxtail mask cost?

The Out Fox Field Guard costs $46 per mask, regardless of the size. This may seem like a lot, but when you compare it to a $200 vet bill for one foxtail, it’s worth it!
I would also like to mention that I have had the same mask for years, so you really do get your money’s worth.
